When I was 19 years old, I was sentenced to 20 years in prison for armed robbery and sent to a maximum-security facility. As prison is a constant mental battle, going in at an early age was particularly tough. I remember days when self-defeating thoughts plagued my mind so badly, I wanted to end my life. I had no confidence in myself to change; I felt depressed and hopeless and did not know how to battle through it. Only once I was placed in solitary confinement did I begin to experience a gradual but steady shift in my mindset.
I became relentless in my pursuit for understanding as to why I had developed the callous mindset that created so much destruction. I desperately wanted to understand the human mind with the hope that in doing so, I could then understand my own. I developed a deep need to find an answer to the question that was keeping me up at night: What is my purpose in life?
The self-awareness that developed over this time altered my perception of how I viewed the world and my place in it. This renewed mindset revealed to me that ultimately, I was meant to inspire and initiate positive transformation in others.
Thinking back on my younger self, I was that quiet kid in the back of the classroom, too shy and insecure to raise my hand and speak even when I knew the answer to a question. I had low self-esteem and zero confidence. I can remember having so much self-doubt that I would pretend to be sick on days that I had a class presentation. As I got older, my fear of public speaking continued: I still held back, lived an unfulfilled life, and missed out on key opportunities.
Once I developed the right mindset, I was able to conquer my self-doubt and speak with confidence. Today I am a professional speaker and through the power of words able to inspire positive transformation in the lives of others.
Having transformed my life after experiencing homelessnes, addiction, gang life, and 17 years in prison, I now open source my wisdom and knowledge to the world, inspiring and motivating others to overcome their personal battles and go on to live meaningful lives.
My mission now through speaking, is to help people change their perspective to become more mindful and conscious. As well as offer strategies, practices, concepts, and guidance to empower others to initiate the mind shift needed to achieve success.
BOOK ME AS A SPEAKER:
While in solitary confinement, I made the decision to take my knowledge and wisdom back to the general population prison yard with the intent of helping other inmates realize their own capacity for change. I was initially apprehensive about taking my renewed way of thinking back to that negative space among the other inmates who knew me as someone who had been at the helm of destruction-someone who had called the shots and led with toxicity-who would now approach them from a completely different perspective. I wrestled with the thoughts: How would I be viewed? To what degree would my credibility be questioned? What danger might I be in if I could not convince others that my transformation was authentic? How could I persuade others that positive change was both possible and worthwhile?
In essence, it was on that yard that I first became a coach and mentor as I guided and supported those men to gain confidence in themselves to transform their thinking. I saw firsthand how mental breakthroughs led to and initiated a desire within them to change, but until then had not the courage nor tools to do so.
Once I was released, I realized that the impact coaching had on the men in prison was equally needed in the world that awaited me. I discovered that there is value in this line of work, both in and outside of prison. For this reason, I founded How to Battle and decided to devote my life to the service of others and bringing about positive change.
BOOK ME AS A COACH OR MENTOR:
"Carlos inspired his students to become better versions of themselves while improving their confidence. He was the epitome of what our program mentors are trained to do, which is help students grow."
"I was at a point in my life where I thought I had reached my personal peak, and that my environment kept me from exceeding that. Carlos taught me how to identify pain points in my thought process that were self-inhibiting and how to forge the fires of opportunity out of my immediate surroundings."
"Carlos has an eye for seeing the good in people. When you are being your own worst critic, Carlos praises you on your best qualities and encourages you to highlight your strengths. He inspired and motivated me to pursue my wildest dreams. He planted a seed in me that helped me become the person I am meant to be."
"As a coach, Carlos has given me a comprehensive road map for augmenting the present intangibles that I already posses. He taught me that my routines will become my habits and my friends have a direct nexus to my success. He coached me into bringing value to those in my life and taught me the importance of team building."
We can all be more confident, just like we can all be stronger and healthier. It requires effort to gain personal success. Nothing that lasts comes easy. Confidence must be earned like all other great achievements.
How to Battle is like body building except instead of working with you to build your muscles up, I work with you to build your confidence up. Like fitness, results are earned. You can get in shape and feel good about yourself, but if you stop working out it won't take long before you start feeling discouraged. The point is that confidence building is like working out, you have to be committed, disciplined, motivated, and consistent if you want to achieve life long results.
How to Battle is for you If you want to acquire a mindset for success and make some serious changes in your life. My program is a combination of mental and physical practices that will develop a more confident you. It offers proven steps, strategies, tools, motivation, and coaching to help you conquer self-doubt, build confidence and maintain it.
Look, everyone is facing some type of battle in their life. There's a "How to" guide for everything these days, How to Battle is the blueprint for overcoming the battles you undertake. Everything that you want to achieve and overcome manifests from some degree of confidence. Without it, making the best decisions for yourself is pretty difficult.
I often hear people say things like, "My goal is to be more confident." I'm reminded of what Antoine de Saint-Exupery said, "A goal without a plan is just a wish." Just as you can't wish yourself into better shape, the same goes for wanting a more confident mindset. You have to earn it. You have to stop just wishing and dreaming about feeling better about yourself--you have to take action and put in the work. Life becomes so much more meaningful when you are confident enough to go after your dreams. The path may not always be clear, but you can't let that stop you from going after the life that you want.
You have to take action.
